Your fund balance may appear lower than expected for several reasons:

  • You Have Sold Your Holdings or Closed Your Position

When you sell shares or close a position, not all of the funds will be credited to your balance on the same day. The exchange takes time to settle the trade, which follows a settlement cycle. Learn more about the settlement cycle.

Example: If you sell a share of ABC worth ₹100 today, 80% (₹80) will be added to your fund balance on the same day, while the remaining 20% (₹20) will be added the next trading day.

  • Charges and Taxes for Your Orders

Every order you place incurs charges and taxes, which will be debited from your fund balance at the end of the day. Check this article to learn about order charges and taxes.

  • Maintenance Charge Deduction

Depending on your plan, Upstox may charge a fee to maintain your Demat account. This is a fixed fee that is deducted quarterly or annually based on your account's opening plan.

Example:
If your fund balance was ₹50 last time you checked and it’s now reduced to -₹38.50, ₹88.50 (₹75 + GST) has been charged as a quarterly maintenance fee.

Maintenance charges apply only to accounts opened before August 2021:

Annual Maintenance Charges (AMC): ₹150 + GST = ₹177

Quarterly Maintenance Charges (QMC): ₹75 + GST = ₹88.50

To learn how to check AMC/QMC charges.

  • Quarterly Settlement

A SEBI initiative transfers your fund balance (both funds and securities) to your primary bank account registered with Upstox once every 30 or 90 days. In such cases, your fund balance will be reset to zero.

Example:
If you had ₹100 in your fund balance and it suddenly became zero, your balance was likely transferred to your bank account during a quarterly settlement.

  • Marked to Market Loss

If you hold positions in futures, losses may be deducted from your account, which could reduce your balance.

  • Scheduled Maintenance Activity

Upstox conducts maintenance every day between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM to ensure a smooth experience. During this time, your fund balance may not be accurate. Please check your balance after 6:00 AM for the correct amount.
